Here’ s a lovely decoration group to an Australian soldier serving in the Australian Imperial forces (AIF) comprising a trio of medals. This is his full entitlement (no 1914-15 Star entitlement: enlisted in 1916) comprising Military Medal (MM) British War Medal (BWM) and Victory Medal (VM) all correctly impressed as follows. Military Medal:’4542 Pte V. BWM & VM to’4542 PTE. Medals are court mounted and in EF condition. The medals are accompanied by a research article for a local historical society in Victoria Australia, the Greensborough Historical Society (a suburb of Mbourne, Victoria). The article was researched and written by. Val Wilson who was apparently Splatt’s grand-niece (see the photos). The article has some nice pictures of Splatt in uniform and post war with wife. More research could be done, his military file is available online. Splatt was born in Greensborough on 7th February, 1893. He enlisted in January 1916 with a group of mates. They all became part of the 11th reinforcements of the 22nd Battalion, AIF. In August-September 1918, the Battalion helped capture Mont St. Quentin, and then took part in the last fighting by the AIF on the Western Front at Montbrehain in October 1918. Splatt took part in the battles of 1916, 1917 and 1918, being wounded in both 1917 and 1918, and was awarded the Military Medal (MM) in June 1918, for actions at Ville-sur-Ancre, as follows. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Ville-sur-Ancre on the morning of the 9th inst. This man was acting as company runner and though wounded whilst advancing onto the enemy position, he remained on duty and refused to go to the R. He rendered invaluable assistance to his company commander in maintaining communication with the Platoon in the advanced posts, passing many times across the most exposed positions under severe M. He continued to carry messages and rendered splendid service right through the operation. He lived in Greensborough, then Oakleigh for the rest of his life. He died in 1967 aged 74 years. Canada World War 1 MILITARY MEDAL MM Group 58th Overseas Battalion Lieutenant

This is a Canadian World War 1 medal group which includes the Military Medal(MM), 1914-18 General Service(War) medal and the 1914-19 Victory medal. The medals were awarded and named to T. (Thomas Francis Russell) Edwards. Edwards enlisted as a private in Lethbridge Alberta in September 1915. He served with the 82nd Calgary Highlanders(#160337) until March 3 at which time he was released to accept a posting with the 91st Elgin Regiment(#190076) on March 16th, 1916. He sailed for Britain on June 29th, 1916. He was promoted to Sergeant on July 5th, 1916. On December 3rd, 1917, he was transferred to the 58th Overseas battalion and sailed for France on the same day. He stayed in France until August 31st, 1918 at which time he went back to England to accept a commission for promotion to Lieutenant. There is no indication of when the Military Medal was awarded but given the Battalion’s location and Edwards timing in France, it may have been at the Battle of Amiens in August of 1918. The award is listed in the London Gazette 31173 dated February 11, 1919. The medals are named as such, you will note that the last 2 medals have the last name spelled incorrectly. Military Medal – 190076 SJT: T. 58/BN:2/C, ONT:R. 1914-18 War Medal – LIEUT. 1914-19 Victory Medal – LIEUT T. The medals are in very good uncleaned condition and still showing original patina. WW2 Australian Army El Alamein killed in action group of 5 medals to Private F. Chaney, who served B Coy, 2/32nd Battalion. 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, with clasp 8th ARMY, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45, Australian Service Medal 1939-45. All named WX10881 F. CHANEY, first 2 medals pantographed style naming, the rest impressed. Medals come direct from the family. Francis Frederick Chaney was born in Perth Western Australia on 3/10/1920. 16/4/1941 he departed Fremantle and on the 3/5/41 arrived Middle East to 9th Division Postal Unit. 6/10/1942 Transferred to 2/32 Bn. 31/10/42 He was reported missing believed to be P. But on the 1/11/42 reported K. He was buried at the El Alamein box cemetery on the 2/11/41. The 2/32nd Battalion and the Battle of El Alamein. Field Marshall Montgomery, Commander of the British Eighth Army, originally planned his break out operation,’Super-charge’, for the night of 31 October-1 November 1942. However, to ensure that it was adequately planned and prepared, the attack was postponed until the night of 1-2 November. During this planning stage it was vital that the pressure remained on the enemy and the 9th Australian Division launched an ambitious attack with two brigades on the night of 31 October-1 November. The 2/32nd Battalion’s role was to capture the enemy’s position at the main road at Barrel Hill. Forming defensive flanks to the north, northwest and west, they would form a screen for the 2/48th and the 2/24th Battalions to advance. In the last stage of the attack, the 2/32nd would provide the 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion with anti-tank gun and machine-gun support. A German sniper shot at two of the battalion’s officers who were reconnoitring before the attack, killing one of the officers. Casualties increased during their advance on the railway line. Despite their increasing casualties, the Australians captured the vital bridgehead known as the’saucer’, the 1-kilometre area which included the German medical post, the Blockhouse, Barrel Hill and a crossing in the railway embankment. During the next day the Australians struggled to hold the area as together with British troops they fought a furious battle against the counter-attack by German tanks. By the evening of 1 November, the exhausted and depleted Australian units were still holding their positions at the’saucer’. We list militaria and coins weekly. Genuine full size medal impressed VX30371 C. Charles Banks was born on the 10. Of October 1906 in Wolverhampton, England. He enlisted in the Australian Armyon the 10. Allocated service number VX30371, hejoined the 2/21st Infantry Battalion. The 2/21st Battalion along withother support elements were referred to as Gull Force and their destinationwas the Island of Ambon in the Netherlands, East Indies. Gull Force arrived onAmbon and was tasked with defending the Islands harbour and airstrip. TheAustralian force was split into two, one part protecting the Laha airstrip andthe other part protecting the harbour, Charles was part of the latter force. With a total force numbering1131 men the Australians were expected to defend the Island, however when aJapanese force of around 20,000 troops landed, the inevitable happened and mostbecame prisoners of war. Charles officially died of Illness as a Prisoner of War at Tan Toey Camp on the 3. He was one of the409 men who died of starvation, overwork, disease and brutality on Ambon Island. WW 1 Officer’s British War Medal. Captain W G Harker. 8th Battalion Hampshire Regiment. World War 1 campaign medal: British War Medal. The full size silver medal is on a short length of original ribbon. Captain Harker served with the 8th Battalion Hampshire Regiment. He was appointed Captain as of 9th August 1917. He relinquished his commission on account of ill health caused by wounds on 18th April 1919 and retained the rank of Captain. Announced in the London Gazette 15th April 1919. Copies of Gazette entries with the medal. Very good age toned condition and with scope for further research. Unfortunately not my interest area. The grouping comprising the following. Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) , correctly impressed to 307 SJT. 1914-15 Star, correctly impressed to. British War Medal correctly impressed 2/LIEUT. Also comes with his original Gallipoli Plaque (issued 1967), this is correctly engraved in the known original style C. Also a small “21st Battalion Association” badge. Lots of copy photographs of Willis as an enlisted soldier. Later as an officer as well during and after the war with comrades – you can pick Willis as he is proudly wearing his medals including the DCM. Also comes with 3 original metal wound stripes with backing plates and pins (Willis was wounded in action three times). Willis survived the sinking of the troopship “Southland” which was on its way to Gallipoli when sunk. Approximately 20 soldiers from the 21st Battalion were killed in this sinking (by an Austrian submarine). The survivors continued on to Gallipoli where Willis served for approximately 4 months, leaving at the evacuation. He then proceeded to France. After Passchendaele, he was – according to his notes, … Birdwood in the Field, later in England presented with medal [DCM] at a Decoration Parade in Cambridge, by G. ” 1739 DCMs to Australians according to Johnson’s’Australian’s Awarded”. Ceramic’ in late 1918. In WW2, the’Ceramic’ was sunk by German Submarine’U505′. This very submarine is now in the Chicago Science Museum. Comes with many different copies of “The Red and Black Diamond”, the newsletter of the 21st Battalion all the way up to the late 1980s. Also, a copy (1/100) of “The Story of the Twenty-First”. Also copies of his service records and copies of pages of his diary. The Citation for the DCM is a good one:.. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of his company after all the officers had become casualties. They dug themselves in on the second objective, and firmly established their part of the line. Though wounded in the head, he remained on duty until the battalion was relieved. (LG dated 6th February 1918). These Medals – including naming – (in other words – all aspects of them) are guaranteed. Not mucked around with at all. See my very good feedback. Military Medal, George V WW1 for Vimy Ridge to : 14th Bn (Royal Montreal Regiment) Canadian Infantry, with citation. Named to : 124334 A. VF condition with one small edge knock. 9th July, 1917 : “For Gallantry and devotion to duty near THELUS on April 9th, 1917, in assuming command of his Platoon after his seniors had become casualties, His conduct throughout was a spendid example to all ranks”. Award was authorized by General Currie on 16/5/17. Robert Lewis was born in Calgary, Alberta on 26/8/1886, he was a Cook by occupation. He attested at Windsor, Ontario on 3/11/15 giving his address as Indiana, USA. He joined the 70th Battalion but was transferred to the 142nd Battalion in England. Appointed Acting Sergeant the next day, he soon reverted to the ranks to proceed overseas with the 14th Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal for the historic attack on Vimy Ridge and later was gassed on 7th November 1917 and evacuated to England. He did not return to France but was promoted to Sergeant. He married Edna Beatrice at some point during the war but on discharge still gave his sister as next of kin and his forwarding address as 11th Machine Gun Bn. Camp Lewis, Washington, USA. Therefore appears to of re-enlisted in the US Army right away. He also received the War Service Badge, Class “A”. With copy of service file. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a military engagement fought primarily as part of the Battle of Arras, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, during the First World War. The main combatants were the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in the First Army, against three divisions of the German 6th Army. The battle, which took place from 9 to 12 April 1917, was part of the opening phase of the Battle of Arras, the first attack of the Nivelle Offensive, intended to attract German reserves from the French front. The objective of the Canadian Corps was to take control of the German-held high ground along an escarpment at the northernmost end of the Arras Offensive. This would ensure that the southern flank could advance without suffering German enfilade fire. Supported by a creeping barrage, the Canadian Corps captured most of the ridge during the first day of the attack. The village of Thélus fell during the second day of the attack, as did the crest of the ridge, once the Canadian Corps overcame a salient against considerable German resistance. The final objective, a fortified knoll located outside the village of Givenchy-en-Gohelle, fell to the Canadian Corps on 12 April. The German forces then retreated to the OppyMéricourt line. WW2 Medal Group Killed in Action 2nd Armoured Battalion Welsh Guards

Complete World War Two Medal Group to a Lance. From the 2nd Armoured. Welsh Guards (Guards Armoured Division Reconnaissance and Scouting) who was killed in action. The medals were awarded to 2737430 Lance. Henry Leonard Green came from Bristol and he served with the 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards which formed the Guards Armoured Division Reconnaissance and Scouting – and who was killed in action on 1st September 1944 during the fighting around the town of Arras. He is buried in the London Cemetery and Extension in Longeuval in the Somme region. There is another Welsh Guardsman and several members of the Royal Armoured Corps and the Reconnaissance Corps (Royal Armoured Corps) who were killed in action on this date. This was just before the 100 mile in one day advance when the battalion was the first unit to liberate Brussels on 3rd September 1944. The 2nd Armoured Battalion Welsh Guards were part of the 6th Guards Armoured Brigade and they were the leading battalion of the Guards Armoured. The 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards was originally an infantry unit but later converted to an armoured role, becoming the divisional scouting and reconnaissance unit of the Guards Armoured Division. This division landed in France on 29 June 1944 and fought its way across North West Europe. It participated in many of the Normandy breakout battles, Operation Market Garden, the advance on and subsequent crossing of the Rhine and the drive into Germany itself. They were equipped with Cromwell and Stuart Tanks. I have attached a photo showing some of the men of the battalion with their Cromwell Tank in June 1944 above. The group includes the original medal box sent to his father, the medal slip insert confirming his name and service number and the award of the 4 medals, the defence medal, war medal, 1939-45 star and the France and Germany Star. The medals include their original envelope packets. The box, slip and medals are all in very good condition. The medals have rarely been taken out of their packets and are in mint condition. A good complete group of medals which is worthy of more research. Please let me know if you need any additional photos or details.
