With a pair of dog tags and a personalized disc depicting a. Pyramid, with service papers showing Alexander William Campbell was born 25/6/1903 in Cape Town, South Africa. He was a Motor Mechanic and served in East Africa and the Middle East with The 3rd Mechanical Transport Co. From 20/5/1940 – 8/8/1940, then Technical Service Corps attached 4th Field Regiment, S. Artillery from 15/6/41 – 11/12/1942 and then T. From 1/1/1943 – 15/10/1943 when discharged due to being medically unfit. He rose to the rank of Temporary Corporal (Fitter). All medals are officially named to: 74618 A. Campbell and are confirmed in his papers including the 8th Army clasp. The 4th Field Regiment fought at Gazala and El Alemein as part of the 1st S. Offered is a Queens South Africa Medal (1899 -02) with 4 clasps CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, TRANSVAAL, SOUTH AFRICA 1902, impressed named 2932 BUG. Comes with copies of medal rolls, service papers, pension card and M. Bugler James Black was born in March 1879 at Edinburgh, a shoe maker by trade, he enlisted with the 4. Battalion Highland Light infantry as a 14 year ol boy 5/9/1895. Posted to the 3. He served in the Boer War with the service number 2932. Pte Black served South Africa 24/12/01 19/9/02. Following heavy British losses in the early part of the Second Boer War in 1899, many of the militia battalions were embodied for active service, including the 3rd Battalion Highland Light (formerly the 1st Royal Lanark Militia). On the 15/12/1902 he transferred to the 1. I and served with them until his discharge in 28/3/1919. He was given the new service number being 5923. He managed to avoid serious injury or disease in his 23 years service apart from a 12-day hospital stay in June 1913. He served: Home 30/8/1895 23/12/01. South Africa 24/12/01 19/9/02. He re joining the Battalion in Mesopotamia, possibly. As he had completed 20 years service by that stage. Also entitled to the 1914 15 Star and pair, Long Service and Good Conduct with gratuity. His character being described as exemplary and on the 25/5/1919 was granted a pension for life. Battalion saw some serious fighting including 1914; Battles of La Bassee, 1st Messines and Armentieres. In 1915; Battles of Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge, Festubert and Loos. Mesopotamia: Action at Fat-ha Gorge on the Little Zab and the Battle of Sharqat. Jan 1917 Left the 3rd (Lahore) Division and moved to defend Tigris. Sept 1917 Transferred to the 51st Brigade of the 17th Division. 31.10.1918 Ended the war in Mesopotamia, Huwaish on Tigris north of Sharqat. Boer War Queens South Africa Medal to Private W. Croghan, 6th Inniskilling Dragoons, who was later the Commandant of the Wirksworth Home Guard during WW1. Queens South Africa Medal 1899 1902 with 5 clasps, CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, JOHANNESBURG, DIAMOND HILL, BELFAST. Impressed named 3017 PTE W. Comes with copies service papers, medal rolls national census, newspaper articles. Walter Edward Croghan was born in 1871 at Al Saints, Leicestershire. He enlisted to the 6th Dragoons Inniskilling Dragoons on the 11/9/1889, he was serving with the 1st Volunteer Battalion Leicestershire Regiment at the time. Croghan was up and down the ranks to Corporal a few times including being reduced for drunkenness and on another occasion whilst on active service in South Africa, was charged by Court Martial for absence and reduced to the ranks again. At the time he was employed within the Regiment as a saddle tree maker. Croghan served in England from 2/9/1889 22/10/1899. South Africa 23/10/1899 3/4/1901 and England 4/4/1901 1/7/1902 which was the termination of his enlistment. He ran a public house the Red Lion Hotel later in life and was the Commandant of the Wirksworth Home Guard WW1, and died on the 3/4/1935 in Leicestershire. In WW2 his pub the Red Lion was used as the HQ for the Wirksworth Home Guard. After the outbreak of the Second Boer War in October 1899, the regiment was sent to South Africa. It formed part of General Frenchs force in the operations around Colesberg the squadrons formed part of the cavalry brigade which served in all the engagements in the general advance on Pretoria, which was captured on 5 June 1900. They took part in the battles of Diamond Hill (June 1900) and Belfast (August 1900), and in the following cavalry advance on Barberton in the Eastern Transvaal. The regiment subsequently joined a column under the command of Colonel Michael Rimington in the Orange River Colony, taking part in miscellaneous raids and drives there throughout the last year of the war, which ended with the Peace of Vereeniging on 31 May 1902.
