Original WW1 Australian Named Medal Pair, Wounded in Action, 7th Btn France 1918

This is a guaranteed original WW1 Australian medal pair to an aussie digger who was wounded in action. These medals were awarded to him after serving in France with the famous 7th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. Both medals are named to Extra Regimental (ER) Corporal Robert Paine , 7 Btn AIF. He arrived in England in November 1916. While serving in the 7th Battalions frontline trenches in July 1918 near Mont de Merris (after already having been in the trenches of northern France for over a year – since April 1917), he received a shell wound to his face , which put him in out of action for 2 months. I have not replaced the ribbons on this set as these ribbons are original and have never been separated from the medals before. I’m always listing more authentic militaria from around the world! Officer with his katana / sword. To 180457 Captain Hubert Peter Cornaby who was killed in action on 2nd March 1945 when he was 24 years old. Hubert came from Chiswick in Middlesex. The group includes the following. Named Army Condolence Slip – Captain H. Named medal box – sent to his mother Mrs R Garszynski at 14 Queen Anne’s Grove in Bedford Park, London (Ruth Anna Cornaby had got divorced in 1940 had re-married Jan Garszynski in 1945). Captain Cornaby was second in command of’A’ Squadron of the 7th Light Cavalry. A Japanese officer and a private soldier had been hiding on the roadside. Whilst the tanks were engaging other targets up ahead, a Japanese officer and a private soldier ran out of cover towards Captain Cornaby’s Lee tank. The private was killed by machine gun fire from another tank but the officer managed to climb onto Captain Cornaby’s tank. He killed Cornaby with his sword and he also killed the turret gunner. After Hubert and the turret gunner of the tank had been killed the Japanese officer jumped into the tank and attacked Vernon Jenkins. Trooper Vernon Jenkins was the tank loader on Captain Cornaby’s tank. During the struggle Vernon managed to fire all six rounds of his revolver into the Japanese officer and three more rounds from another revolver he managed to grab before the officer fell down dead. Jenkins was awarded the military medal for bravery for his actions in killing the Japanese officer. The katana sword that killed Hubert is one of the star items and treasures of the Scotts Dragoon Guards Museum in Edinburgh and it can be seen on their website. The sword was donated to the museum by Trooper Vernon Jenkins. Details of the attack and death of Captain Hubert Cornaby are included in the book’Tank Tracks to Rangoon by Bryan Perrett’. There is a photo of Hubert Cornaby when he attended Old Aldenham School in Hertfordshire shown above – he is on the third row from the front, forth from the right. Hubert’s father was William Basil Cornaby a Far Eastern Trader and Shipper of Hong Kong – where Hubert had been born. Captain Cornaby had joined the regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant on 15th April 1941. He was promoted to Captain and also Temporary Major from 12th January 1944. Captain Cornaby was initially buried in Mandalay but his body, along with other servicemen, was re-buried at the Taukkyan War Cemetery in Myanmar (formally Burma). He was one of the original commissioning crew of the H. Sydney and one of the few R. N sailors present at the Sydney-Emden action. From settlement in 1788, to 1859, Australia depended on units detached from the Royal Navy based in Sydney to provide Naval defence. In 1859, Australia was established as a separate British Naval Station, and until 1913, a squadron of the Royal Navy was maintained in Australian waters. At an Imperial Conference held in 1909, it was decided to deploy to Australian waters a naval unit consisting of at least a battle cruiser, three second class cruisers, six destroyers, three submarines and a number of auxiliaries. Detailed discussions were held on 19 August 1909 between representatives of the British Admiralty and the Australian Government that resulted in a decision to proceed with the establishment of an Australian Fleet Unit. The first units of this Navy, the destroyers, H. Ships Yarra and Parramatta, reached Australian waters in November 1910 and in the following year on 10 July 1911, His Majesty King George V granted the title of’Royal Australian Navy’ to the Commonwealth Naval Forces. In June 1912, a third destroyer, H. Warrego was commissioned at Sydney and in 1913 the battle cruiser, H. Australia and the light cruisers, H. Ships Melbourne and Sydney arrived in Australian waters. On the 4 October 1913, the Australian Fleet entered Sydney harbour for the first time and in October of the same year formal control of these units passed to the Commonwealth Naval Board. He served on the following Royal Australian Navy Ships and establishments. (Chief Engine Room Artificer CL II). (Chief Engine Room Artificer CL I). Sydney was a Chatham-class light cruiser. 5400 tons capable of 26 knots, an armaments of 8 x 6-inch guns, 1 x 13-pounder gun, 4 x 3-pounder guns & 2 torpedo tubes. She had a crew of 376 men. The first cruiser laid down for the R. Was Sydney which was launched in August 1912 by Lady Henderson, wife of Admiral Sir Reginald Henderson. She commissioned at Portsmouth on 26 June 1913. She departed Portsmouth on 25 July 1913 and first arrived on the Australia Station at Albany on 19 September 1913. On 4 October 1913 she formed part of the Australian Fleet Unit that ceremonially entered her namesake harbour to a rapturous welcome from tens of thousands of spectators who turned out on the shores of the harbour to welcome the arrival of their fleet. Frederick Turner was one of the original crew to commission and bring H. And in fact one of the founding members of the R. Prior to the outbreak of the war the permanent strength of the R. At that time comprised 3800 personnel, of whom some 850 were on loan from the Royal Navy. The days preceding the outbreak of war in August 1914 found Sydney in Queensland waters. On 3 August 1914 she was joined at Townsville by the destroyers H. Warrego and Yarra before proceeding north to form a unit of Admiral Patey’s Pacific Squadron. Following the outbreak of war on 4 August 1914, Sydney operated in New Guinea and Pacific waters and in the brief campaign against the German Pacific possessions during which she carried out a series of punitive patrols. Highlights during this period included the capture of Rabaul (9 to 11 September 1914) and the destruction of the Angaur Island Wireless Station on 26 September 1914. The convoys escort comprised Sydney, Melbourne, H. Minotaur and the Japanese cruiser Ibuki. The convoy sailed from Albany on 1 November 1914 and on the morning of 9 November 1914 was steaming some 50 miles east of the Cocos Islands. At about 06:20 on 9 November, wireless telegraphy operators in several transports as well as in the escorting warships received signals in an unknown code followed by a query from the Cocos Island station,’What is that code’? It was in fact the German cruiser Emden under the command of Captain Karl von Müller, ordering her collier Buresk to join her at Point Refuge to coal. Shortly afterwards, the Cocos Island telegraphists signalled’Strange warship approaching followed later by the same message prefixed by S. The international distress call. By 07:00 Sydney was doing twenty knots and at 09:15 had simultaneously sighted the island and the Emden some seven or eight miles distant. Emden opened fire at a range of 10,500 yards using the then very high elevation of thirty degrees. Her first salvo was’ranged along an extended line but every shot fell within two hundred yards of Sydney. The next salvo was on target and for the next ten minutes the Australian cruiser came under heavy, accurate fire. Fifteen hits were recorded but fortunately only five burst. It was during the opening stage of the engagement that Sydney sustained all of her casualties. Two shells from a closely-bunched salvo hit the after-control platform wounding all of the personnel closed up there, while a direct hit on the upper bridge range finder took off the operator’s leg putting the equipment out of action. Sydney’s first salvo went’far over the Emden’. The second fell short and the third scored two hits. Meanwhile, Von Müller, aware that his only chance lay in putting Sydney out of action quickly, maintained a high rate of fire, reported to be a salvo every six seconds. It was to no avail. In spite of the damage to her range-finders Sydney used her superior speed and fire power and raked the German cruiser. Her shells wrecked the enemy’s steering gear, shot away both range-finders and smashed the voice pipes, severing communications between the conning tower and the guns. Shortly afterwards Emdens forward funnel toppled overboard followed by the foremast which carried away the primary fire control station and wrecked the fire bridge. Despite the damage and the inexorable end, Von Müller continued the engagement. Half his crew was disabled until’only the artillery officer and a few unskilled chaps were still firing. Finally, with his engine room on fire and with a second funnel gone, he gave the order’to the island with every ounce you can get out of the engines. Shortly after 11:00, Emden was seen to be fast on the North Keeling Island Reef. At the conclusion of the action Sydney heading for Colombo, from where she later proceeded to Malta where she arrived on 3 December 1914. On 9 September 1916 Sydney finally left Bermuda, arriving at Devonport on 19 September before proceeding to Greenock for refit. On 31 October 1916 she was temporarily attached to the 5th Battle Squadron at Scapa Flow. On 15 November she sailed for Rosyth and on arrival joined her sister ships HMS Southampton, HMS Dublin and HMAS Melbourne as part of the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron, attached to the 2nd Battle Squadron of which HMAS Australia was the flagship. For the remainder of the war her service was confined to North Sea patrols. On 4 May 1917, while on patrol from the Humber estuary to the mouth of the Firth, Sydney fought a running engagement with the German Zeppelin L43 until Sydney had expended all the anti-aircraft ammunition and the L43 all her bombs. Nil damage to either parties. Sydney sailed from Portsmouth on 9 April 1919 for the return passage to Australia calling at Gibaltar, Malta, Port Said, Port Suez, Aden, Colombo, Singapore, Penang, and Thursday Island before arriving in her home port of Sydney on 18 July 1919. Operating with the Fleet, mainly in home waters, she served in this role until 1929. Town class light cruiser. In 1918 a commemorative medallion was struck by the Navy to recognise Australias first naval fight. The centrepiece for this medallion consisted of a Mexican silver dollar, of which some 6429 were recovered from the wreck of Emden. The coins were mounted by the Sydney jeweller W Kerr and presented by Captain Glossop to the officers and men of the Sydney who were on board at the time of the engagement. A rare piece of Australian military history. Frederick Turner was one of the first men to be recruited and posted as a “Electrical Artificer”, and as such he was one of the 850 Royal Navy sailors who was seconded to the Royal Australian Navy on its formation. 25TH APRIL 1915 FIRST DAY GALLIPOLI AUSTRALIAN WW1 MEDAL TRIO comprising: 1914-15 STAR, BRITISH WAR MEDAL & VICTORY MEDAL, all correctly impressed 62 PTE H BLAKELEY 6TH BN. ” Also present is the MEMORIAL PLAQUE correctly named to “HARRY BLAKELEY. There is also a nice little’TRIBUTE MEDAL’ issued by the City of Heidelberg, which is an inner-suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. On the side that can be seen, around the rim of the medallion, it states’FOR KING AND COUNTRY’and below;’1915 A. In the centre is the wording on a boomerang! PRESENTED TO and then engraved H. The medallion is in great condition. These types of medallions, whilst scarce now, were reasonably common to Australian units during the war. The 6th Battalion was a’famous fighting infantry battalion’. Get the unit history, it provides good context. All of these items are beautifully framed (See the photos). The medals are court-mounted for display, and there is a marvelous, large, detailed photograph measuring 38cm high by 50cm wide which is a recent print of a contemporary photograph. This print shows 11 young men who were all members of the 6th Battalion, AIF. There is a gold-coloured PLAQUE which provides details of the men. It seems that these men were pre-war members of the’Melbourne University’ Regiment. There is one officer in the group, 2nd Lt. He wears the uniform and badges of the Melbourne University Regiment. Sadly, of eleven men pictured, four were KILLED ON 25TH APRIL1915, two KILLED elsewhere during the war, with five making it home. Beautifully framed, great condition. Overall item size is 62cm high by 85cm wide. Impressive, scarce and a wonderful talking point and investment. I can pack it well so as it will make it to you safely. You are VERY welcometo collect! Here we have a Fantastic WW2 Gallantry Military Medal Italy Fighting Action Gurkha Medal Group, A fantastic group of 6 loose medals, consisting of a WW2 Military medal correctly impressed to 45911 Naik Manbahadur Gurung 2/4 Ghurka Rifles, has a slight suspension repair, the other 5 medals appear to have been added and are not named, comes with a bit of research with a fantastic citation that reads thus. At 0200 hrs 13 Apr 1945 when the enemy was thought to be withdrawing from his positions in the ORTICA area, Naik Man Bahadur Gurung was ordered to take a patrol strength 1 and 4 to find out if Pt 362 was still held by the enemy. He led his section to the flank of Pt 362 and sent a pair of men on the feature to r. These men reported that there were sentries on the feature and between 40 – 50 others in the rear. By this time it was almost dawn and Naik Man Bahadur decided he could not get the information back and return to keep in touch with the enemy, before daylight. He therefore disposed his patrol in some nearby slit trenches. These proved to be between two enemy positions. Man Bahadur ordered his section to lie low till dark. At approx 1500 hrs the Italians sent a fighting patrol towards Pt 362. Naik Man Bahadur saw it and in spite of certain disclosure of his position, he waved his handkerchief as a warning to the patrol. He then directed the fire of his patrol against the enemy when then fired on him from three directions. At approx 1530 hrs an Italian Coy attack was put in on Pt 362. Naik Man Bahadur took over the Bren Gun and killed three Germans, Wounding several more, The attack was successful. Throughout the action Naik Man Bahadur displayed absolute fearlessness and dogged dertimination inspired his patrol and was without doubt largely responsible for the successful occupation of Pt 362 and subsequently ORTICA, places both strongly defended. This lovely medal group is a nice testament to many of the brave acts towards the end and during WW2 that were done by native troops in service to the Allied forces, Naik Gurungs is no exception! A perfect group for gallantry collectors, museums, dealers, displays, enthusiasts, lectures and much much more! An original group of World War Two medals to a Royal Air Force Aircraftman 1st Class who was killed in action on 1st November 1943. The medals were awarded to Arthur Wilson who came from Shildon in County Durham. The Air Crew Europe Star. The original memorial scroll named to Aircraftman 1st Class A. Wilson Royal Air Force with some writing, the medals included and the address for Mrs J Wilson on the reverse. A pre-war photo of Arthur Wilson in suit and tie marked AK1 A Wilson RAF KIA on the reverse in pencil. Arthur Wilson was born in 1921 and he was 22 when he died in 1943. His death was registered in Shrewsbury and he is buried at Shildon Cemetery and is commemorated on St John’s Church Shildon war memorial – photos of the memorial shown above. I’m not sure on the actual action that caused his death but this could be researched. It would have been one of his first sorties due to his rank. The medals come with their original ribbons and they have been mounted on a piece of card. Worthy of more research. Please let me know if you need any additional photos or details.
