For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a hostile attack. During a bombardment a telephone wire was cut, and a linesman who was in front, was seen to be wounded. Amidst severe enemy shell and M. G fire he made his way over the open to him, dressed his wounds, and carried him to the nearest shell hole, where he sat waist deep in water for several hours, holding the wounded man in his arms.
