MEDAL IS STAMPED ON IT’S EDGE WITH THE CORNUCOPIA MARK AND 1ARGEANT (95% SILVER) MINT MARK OF THE MONNAIE de PARIS (PARIS MINT). The Battle of Verdun was fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916 on the Western Front in France. The battle was the longest of the First World War and took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse. Obverse: Helmeted and armored bust of Joan de Arc, holding sword right. Legend: ON NE PASSE PAS They Shall not Pass! Reverse: Verdun Castle gates flanked by palm-branches. Legend: VERDUN / 21 FEVRIER 1916. MEDAL DIMENSIONS : 1 7/16″ x 1 7/16″ x 1/8. 0635 POUNDS 1.016 OZ. There are several small dings and scratches on both sides but its details are mostly visible and well defined. A small amount of the gold plating is still present and the double layer steel suspension is time period to the medal. Its connection ring has not been cut. Awarded for Defense of Sevastopol.
