Here’ s a lovely decoration group to an Australian soldier serving in the Australian Imperial forces (AIF) comprising a trio of medals. This is his full entitlement (no 1914-15 Star entitlement: enlisted in 1916) comprising Military Medal (MM) British War Medal (BWM) and Victory Medal (VM) all correctly impressed as follows. Military Medal:’4542 Pte V. BWM & VM to’4542 PTE. Medals are court mounted and in EF condition. The medals are accompanied by a research article for a local historical society in Victoria Australia, the Greensborough Historical Society (a suburb of Mbourne, Victoria). The article was researched and written by. Val Wilson who was apparently Splatt’s grand-niece (see the photos). The article has some nice pictures of Splatt in uniform and post war with wife. More research could be done, his military file is available online. Splatt was born in Greensborough on 7th February, 1893. He enlisted in January 1916 with a group of mates. They all became part of the 11th reinforcements of the 22nd Battalion, AIF. In August-September 1918, the Battalion helped capture Mont St. Quentin, and then took part in the last fighting by the AIF on the Western Front at Montbrehain in October 1918. Splatt took part in the battles of 1916, 1917 and 1918, being wounded in both 1917 and 1918, and was awarded the Military Medal (MM) in June 1918, for actions at Ville-sur-Ancre, as follows. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Ville-sur-Ancre on the morning of the 9th inst. This man was acting as company runner and though wounded whilst advancing onto the enemy position, he remained on duty and refused to go to the R. He rendered invaluable assistance to his company commander in maintaining communication with the Platoon in the advanced posts, passing many times across the most exposed positions under severe M. He continued to carry messages and rendered splendid service right through the operation. He lived in Greensborough, then Oakleigh for the rest of his life. He died in 1967 aged 74 years. It’s a nice lot with a good citation. See my very good feedback. Items located in Melbourne, Australia. THE MOUNTED SET OF MEDALS DISPLAYS STANDING VERTICAL, HORIZONTAL, OR WHEN HUNG FROM A PICTURE HANGER. The medal ribbons Do Not glow whatsoever when set under a UV black light. Each of the medals are mounted securely in the display, I have never attempted to (or will) or had the medals out of the display case. Not sure how the medals are held in-place in the case, but I Do Not see any glue residue on the ribbons whatsoever which is good!! Just a great looking WWI Military Display! The British (English) War Medal is quite interesting being named and numbered along the thin edge. Medal is marked, 240570 PTE A. Research shows a WW1 British Soldier Verification with this same Service Number 240570 Albert Mercer from E. The other cased metals include French (France) War Medal, United States Victory Medal with 3 Battle Clasps, Italy (Italian) War Medal, Belgium War Medal, German Iron Cross, and German Hindenburg Cross with Swords awarded to all German Soldiers whom fought at the front. The medals are all considered Used and appear to be in good shape each. The only damage I noticed is a bit of fraying on the US Victory Medal Ribbon at the upper right corner. Ignature in the United States to the Lower 48 States. Please review the pictures for best description. It is known that Douglas served in WW2 with the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve as he would have been in his mid 50s. His two sons served in the Royal Artillery in WW2. The usual armaments were 6 inch, 8 inch and 9.2 inch howitzers, although some had huge railway- or road-mounted 12 inch howitzers. As British artillery tactics developed, the Siege Batteries were most often employed in destroying or neutralising the enemy artillery, as well as putting destructive fire down on strongpoints, dumps, store, roads and railways behind enemy lines. 157 Siege Battery RGA (four 6 howitzers) first appears in the order of battle in France in Dec 1916, as part of Fifth Army Artillery. It spent 1917 in the Ypres Salient, mostly with Fifth Army, throughout 1917, being attached to various Heavy Artillery Groups. In Feb 1918 when HAGs were re designated Brigades RGA, 157 Siege Battery became part of 70 (9;2 Howitzer) Brigade RGA, in which it remained for the rest of 1918, mostly as part of First Army.
