Staff Sergeant Victor Sykes Grouping Born 3-21-1914 Died 9-9-1961 Enlisted 11-2-1940 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania directly into the Army Air Corp. B17 Tail Gunner 381st Bomb Group, 532nd Bomber Squadron, 8th Air Force. They flew out of Ridgewell, England Station 167. 31 mission flown from 2-17-1944 to 7-12-1944 His Aircrew: Lts Palmer Bradner, William Moore, Sgts James McDonnell, Casimir Wilanowski, William McKinney, Wayne Padgett, Victor Sykes , George Miller. (532 bomb squadron log on website) First mission in April of 1944 : The target for today was the airfield at Oldenburg, a base for single engined fighters. Pilots of this unit were: Lts McCrory, Ezzell, Thomas, Cahill, Bradner , Thompson, Klinksiek. No enemy aircraft were seen, but moderate to intense flak was encountered over the target. All 31 mission are available for viewing on the 381st unit history on the 532nd bomb squadron website. Just remember to search the missions with his head pilots last name: Bradner. Reenlisted in 1945 as his prewar enlistment was not “for duration of war”, like the post Pearl Harbor enlistments. In US Air Force as a Master Sergeant with the 405 Transportation Squadron United States Air Force. Died in 1961 while still with the Air Force.
