Item: i102625 Authentic Medal of. World War I, often abbreviated as WWI or WW1, also known as the First World War or the Great War, was a global war that began on 28 July 1914 and ended on 11 November 1918. It involved much of Europe, as well as Russia, the United States and Turkey, and was also fought in the Middle East, Africa and parts of Asia. One of the deadliest conflicts in history, an estimated 9 million were killed in combat, while over 5 million civilians died from occupation, bombardment, hunger or disease. The genocides perpetrated by the Ottomans and the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic spread by the movement of combatants during the war caused many millions of additional deaths worldwide. In 1914, the Great Powers were divided into two opposing alliances, the Triple Entente, consisting of France, Russia, and Britain, and the Triple Alliance, made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Tensions in the Balkans came to a head on 28 June 1914 following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Austro-Hungarian heir, by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb. Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia and the interlocking alliances involved the Powers in a series of diplomatic exchanges known as the July Crisis. On 28 July, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia; Russia came to Serbia’s defence and by 4 August, the conflict had expanded to include Germany, France and Britain, along with their respective colonial empires. In November, the Ottoman Empire, Germany and Austria formed the Central Powers, while in April 1915, Italy joined Britain, France, Russia and Serbia as the Allied Powers. Facing a war on two fronts, German strategy in 1914 was to defeat France, then shift its forces to the East and knock out Russia, commonly known as the Schlieffen Plan. This failed when their advance into France was halted at the Marne; by the end of 1914, the two sides faced each other along the Western Front, a continuous series of trench lines stretching from the Channel to Switzerland that changed little until 1917. By contrast, the Eastern Front was far more fluid, with Austria-Hungary and Russia gaining, then losing large swathes of territory. Other significant theatres included the Middle East, the Alpine Front and the Balkans, bringing Bulgaria, Romania and Greece into the war. Shortages caused by the Allied naval blockade led Germany to initiate unrestricted submarine warfare in early 1917, bringing the previously neutral United States into the war on 6 April 1917. In Russia, the Bolsheviks seized power in the 1917 October Revolution and made peace in the March 1918 Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, freeing up large numbers of German troops. By transferring these to the Western Front, the German General Staff hoped to win a decisive victory before American reinforcements could impact the war, and launched the March 1918 German spring offensive. Despite initial success, it was soon halted by heavy casualties and ferocious defence; in August, the Allies launched the Hundred Days Offensive and although the German army continued to fight hard, it could no longer halt their advance. The Central Powers began to collapse; Bulgaria signed an Armistice on 29 September, followed by the Ottomans on 31 October, then Austria-Hungary on 3 November. Isolated, facing revolution at home and an army on the verge of mutiny, Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated on 9 November and the new German government signed the Armistice of 11 November 1918, bringing the fighting to a close. The 1919 Paris Peace Conference imposed various settlements on the defeated powers, the best known being the Treaty of Versailles. The dissolution of the Russian, German, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires led to numerous uprisings and the creation of independent states, including Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. For reasons that are still debated, failure to manage the instability that resulted from this upheaval during the interwar period ended with the outbreak of World War II in 1939. Great Britain, also known as Britain, is an island in the North Atlantic off the north-west coast of continental Europe. With an area of 209,331 km. (80,823 sq mi), it is the largest island in Europe and the ninth-largest in the world. In 2011 the island had a population of about 61 million people, making it the third-most populous island in the world, after Java in Indonesia and Honshu in Japan. The island is the largest in the British Isles archipelago, which also includes the island of Ireland to its west and over 1,000 smaller surrounding islands. The island is dominated by an oceanic climate with quite narrow temperature differences between seasons. Politically, the island is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constituting most of its territory: most of England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island, with their respective capital cities, London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. The term Great Britain often extends to include surrounding islands that form part of England, Scotland, and Wales. A single Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the Union of Scotland and England (which already comprised the present-day countries of England and Wales) in 1707. More than a hundred years before, in 1603, King James VI, King of Scots, had inherited the throne of England, but it was not until 1707 that the Parliaments of the two countries agreed to form a unified state. In 1801, Great Britain united with the neighboring Kingdom of Ireland, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, which was renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland after the Irish Free State seceded in 1922. The British Forces eventually restored calm, however, in 1919 the Waziris took advantage of unrest in Afghanistan following the Third Anglo-Afghan War to launch more raids against British garrisons. It has been asserted that one of the reasons for these raids was that a rumour had been spread amongst the Wazirs and the Mahsuds, that Britain was going to give control of Waziristan to Afghanistan as part of the peace settlement following the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Buoyed by this prospect and sensing British weakness, the tribes were encouraged to launch a series of large scale raids in the administered areas. By November 1919, they had killed over 200 people and wounded a further 200. Minor raids by the Wazirs and forays by British forces continued into 1921, however, following the 19191920 campaign, the British decided upon a change of strategy in Waziristan. It was determined that a permanent garrison of regular troops would be maintained in the region to work much more closely with the militia units that were being reconstituted following the troubles that occurred during the 1919 war with Afghanistan. As part of this policy, it was decided that a garrison would be maintained at Razmak. An aerial strafing and bombardment campaign dubbed. Pink’s War was carried out by the Royal Air Force in 1925 (Germans copied this tactic in WW2, better known as “Blitzkrieg”). Conflict flared up again in Waziristan in 1936, resulting in another campaign that lasted until 1939. WW2 Royal Artillery North Africa. During the Second World War, the North African Campaign took place from 10 June 1940 to 13 May 1943. It included campaigns fought in the Libyan and Egyptian deserts (Western Desert Campaign, also known as the Desert War) and in Morocco and Algeria (Operation Torch) and Tunisia (Tunisia Campaign). 2nd battle of El Alamein late 1942 was the major turning point for the allies in WW2, resulting in driving German and italian troops out of North Africa and was the prelude to the Allied Invasion of Italy, later France. This is Great War Trio + Distinguished Conduct Medal + Dress Medals + National Rifle Association + Rife Shooting Medal (1928) to 8/13804 Corporal S. Neal – B Company South Staffordshire Regiment. 8th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment were part of Kitcheners 2nd New Army They joined 51st Brigade Northern Division and subsequently went to south Ypres in January 1916 On Feb. 14th 1916 they were under intense artillery assault from German positions This was followed by an enemy infantry attack. This was the point that Corporal S. Neal was badly injured in his left hip by shrapnel. Yet still saw action that resulted in an act of bravery that led to his award of the D. Conferment of the D. Gallantry award was announced in the London Gazette and accompanied by a citation. He continued to throw bombs (Grenades) during two nights after being wounded, and refused to leave his position until his battalion was relieved. Though only 19 years of age, this young N. Has set a splendid example to his men. The Bluff – 14/02/1916. The Bluff – On 8th February 1916, 17th (Northern) Division had taken over a sector of V Corps front, from near St Eloi to the Ypres-Comines Railway at Zwarte Leen (Zwartelen). The operations in the area of the Bluff from the start of the enemy attack to noon on 17 February cost the British 1,294 casualties. Which included a large mound on the north bank of the canal, known as The Bluff. A spoil heap from the construction of the canal, The Bluff had excellent views over both the British and the German lines and control of it was crucial to control of the area. The Ypres-Comines canal, running south east from the town, cut through the front lines about 3 miles from the Cloth Hall. This was the position at the end of the First Battle of Ypres and it was much the same by 1916, the Second Battle having not altered things. Facing the British, the village of Hollebeke; on the left was the hotly-contested ground of Hill 60 and Zwarteleen, and on the right the hotspot at St Eloi. On the northern embankment of the canal, a curious mound a spoil-heap, created when the canal was excavated gave the British front an unusual observation advantage over the enemy. If the enemy held it, the view across the rear areas of the Salient to Hill 60, towards Ypres and down to Voormezele would have made the Salient very difficult to hold. The position just had to be held. On 14th February, the front was being held by 52nd Infantry Brigade on the right, south of the Ypres-Comines Canal and 51st Infantry Brigade on the left, north of the Canal. 52nd Infantry Brigade had responsibility for defending the Canal itself and it’s right flank battalion, 10th Lancashire Fusiliers was on both banks of the Canal and the right of The Bluff. During the day the whole of the Divisional front had been subjected to an intense artillery bombardment, when at 17.45pm three mines went up around The Bluff. A counter-attack was organised for 21.30pm, but by this time the German’s had consolidated their position with machine-guns and the attack was beaten off. Two more counter-attacks were defeated at 02.00am and 04.00am on 15th February. This is a terrible story of intense action that was not untypical of action experienced in this theatre during the Great War… These medals represent an excellent investment as these medals will increase in value as the years pass.
