Was, despite being a Police Force on the surface of things, deployed in a military capacity whilst the Anglo Boer War raged on. The brainchild of Lord Baden Powell they were to number almost 10 000 when all was said and done and were in the thick of things alongside the Imperial and Colonial troops ranged against the Boers. The Army Service Corps (A S C) were the unsung heroes of the British Army in the Great War. Soldiers can not fight without food, equipment and ammunition. They can not move without horses or vehicles. It was the ASCs job to provide them. In the Great War, the vast majority of the supply, maintaining a vast army on many fronts, was supplied from Britain. Using horsed and motor vehicles, railways and waterways, the ASC performed prodigious feats of logistics and were one of the great strengths of organisation by which the war was won. Laing’s Nek / Defence of Ladysmith. At the commencement of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War in 1899, as the Boers under General Petrus Johannes Joubert invaded Natal, the British and Natal Colonial forces fell back to Ladysmith leaving Northern Natal unprotected. Joubert fully expected that the Langs Nek Tunnel would be ambushed. He sent a coal truck through the passage and was surprised to discover that the British had not. This allowed the Boers to move trains down the escarpment to supply their burghers who were besieging Ladysmith. This had been a strategic mistake by the British, who were reluctant to destroy the infrastructure of Natal as they fell back. The Boers did not make a similar mistake when they retreated the following year. Every bridge, culvert, reservoir and railway was destroyed, including Langs Nek Tunnel or so they thought! Laing’s Nek Tunnel not so badly damaged. The rapid British advance of 1900 prevented the Boers from damaging the tunnel to the extent they wished. They hurriedly dynamited the two entrances to the tunnel, shattering the first 200 feet of the tunnels on either side, before Lord Dundonald and his troops occupied the position on the 10th of May 1900. The British discovered that the tunnel had not been damaged beyond repair, and workers quickly cleared the rubble from the line and tunnel. This allowed trains to supply the British advance into the Orange Free State and Transvaal. A clasp inscribed “Defence of Ladysmith” will be granted to all troops in Ladysmith between November 3. 1899, and February 28. 1900, both dates inclusive. A clasp inscribed “Laing’s Nek” will be granted to all troops of the Natal Field Force employed in operations, and north of an east and west line through Newcastle between June 2.
