Benson, BritishWar Medal and Victory Medal named to ER/2 Cpl L. LeightonWilliam Benson enlisted in the 1. In Sydney in 1915 aged 19 and was originally allotted to the Australian 1. He was promoted to Corporal in early 1916 and was transferred to theAnzac Provost Corps with whom he served throughout the war. It may have had something to do with him marrying a Belgian girl that same month! He ultimately was not discharged in Australia until August 1920. There is a great photo available of him (showing how young he was he doesnt look19) with his father (who was 39 on enlistment) and another soldier taken before they embarked for overseas. His father served originally in the 1. Light Horse on Gallipoli before transferring to the 16. Battalion inFrance and being taken prisoner at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. His wife was unfortunately told he had been KIAd before the authorities learned of his capture. He got back to England in January 1919. All the medals and ribbons are in strikingly good original condition as originally issued and mounted for wear. Please contact me with any questions you have. AUSTRALIAN WW1/WW2 MILITARY MEDAL GROUP TO 23rd Battalion. Medal group of 8 to Australian soldier who volunteered for service in bothWorld War 1 and World War 2 serving in both the 1st and 2nd AIF. MilitaryMedal awarded for gallantry at Villers Bretonneux on 4 July 1918 during theaction in support of the attack on Hamel. Court martialled three times, wounded in action and decorated! Award for Military Medal appears in. Commonwealth Gazette on 12February 1919. Near Villers Bretonneux on the morning of 4. July 1918 this man as a Stretcher Bearer exhibited the greatest courage incarrying back wounded through shell and M. Fire swept ground after most skilfullydressing their wounds. He worked untiringly and had several casualties with hissquad, but was instrumental in organising fresh bearer squads, working untilevery wounded man was cleared from the battlefield. His exceptional courage anduntiring energy was of great service and value. Medals correctly named as follows: Military Medal, G. /Aust: Inf:; British Warand Victory Medals. Thomson 23 Bn AIF. ; Second War medals officially impressed. 1939-45Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; ASM unnamed. Court mounted for display. Arthur Victor Thomson was born in Melbourne in 1892. Heoriginally enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Melbourne on 24December 1914 and served in Melbourne in the Military Police until 11 September1916. He listed his previous job as a Fireman. He embarked for the UK 2 October 2016. His sentence wasremitted when he was sent to France to join the 23. Battalion on 20October 1917. He was Wounded in Action on 19 May 1918. He rejoined the 23rdBattalion lines on 1 June 1918. He was awarded the Military Medal for theaction detailed above on 4 July 2018. He enlisted in the 2. AIF on 22 April 1940 at age 48 and wasallotted to the 2/2 Railway Construction Company. He embarked for the UK thefollowing month and was promoted Lance Corporal in October 1940. He was ultimately discharged in July 1942. He died as the result of an accident at work in January 1953. Comes with full service file. WW1 Australian Gallipoli 1st day lander medal trio to Private G. Fimister, 1st Bn A. Who was badly wounded in action at Leannes Trench 30/10/1915. 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals, impressed named 1549 PTE G. Australian Rising Sun collar badge included & comes with copies Australian Army service papers, embarkation roll, Letter from the front. Professionally glass framed and mounted display. Frame measures 33cm x 54cm. Items can be sent without frames at buyers request. Was born in Adelaide, South Australia on the 28/1/1880. A watchmaker by trade, he enlisted at Liverpool, Sydney on the 2/12/1914, being allotted to the 3rd reinforcements, 2nd Battalion A. He departed Sydney on the 11/2/1915 in the H. At some stage he transferred to the 1st Bn, but as A. C (probably stretcher bearer). He was badly wounded on the 30/10/15 at Leannes Trench with a gunshot wound to back, chest & shrapnel wound thigh. Subsequently evacuated from Gallipoli on the 2/11/15 and embarked for Australia on the 3/1/16. He was discharged permanently unfit on the 10/8/1916. His family were from Western Australia as per newspaper article. Both the 1st & 2nd Battalion were 1st day landers & fought at Lone Pine. We list militaria and coins weekly. Medals correctly impressed named WX8762 J. JOHNSTON, being court mounted for display. Comes with Neil Smith research and copy service record. The 1939-45 Star is awarded for service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 for. A period of six months (180 days) operational service for RAN and Army personnel and RAAF non-air crew personnel. A period of two months operational service for air crew personnel. A period of six months service at sea for Merchant Navy provided at least one voyage was made through one of the specified areas of active operations. The 1939-45 Star is awarded to Australian Civilian Personnel who served afloat with the United States Army Small Ships Section between 8 December 1941 and 2 September 1945. Eligibility is the same as that for Merchant Navy personnel. The Africa Star was granted for operational service in North Africa from the date of the entry of Italy into the war on 10 June 1940, up to the date of the cessation of operations against the enemy in North Africa on 12 May 1943. The Africa Star may also be awarded for operational service as a member of the Australian Defence Force during the Syrian Campaign in the period from 8 June 1941 to 11 July 1941. The Africa Star is awarded for a minimum of one days operational service in North Africa, west of the Suez Canal between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943 and in Syria between 8 June 1941 and 11 July 1941. The Pacific Star is awarded for entry into operational service in the Pacific Theatre of Operations between 8 December 1941 and 2 September 1945. Navy and Merchant Navy personnel are eligible if the 1939-45 Star is earned by six months service or if they entered the Pacific Theatre between 2 March 1945 and 2 September 1945. The Pacific Star is awarded to Australian Civilian Personnel who served afloat with the United States Army Small Ships Section. The Defence Medal is awarded for six months service in a prescribed non-operational area subject to enemy air attack or closely threatened, in Australia and overseas, or for 12 months service in non-prescribed non-operational areas. Within Australia the area is the Northern Territory, north of 14 degrees 30 minutes south, and the Torres Strait Islands between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. Overseas service includes the Middle East, east of the Suez Canal (less the period of the Syrian Campaign) or Malaya prior to the Japanese invasion on 8 December 1941. The War Medal 1939-45 was awarded for 28 days full-time service in the Armed Forces between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. Operational and non-operational service may be counted, providing that it was of 28 days or more duration. In the Merchant Navy there is a requirement that the 28 days should have been served at sea. A member qualifies for the award where service was brought to an end by death, wounds or other disabilities due to service or by cessation of hostilities on 2 September 1945. The War Medal 1939-45 is awarded to Australian Civilian Personnel who served afloat with the United States Army Small Ships Section between 8 December 1941 and 2 September 1945. The medal was originally awarded to those who served at home or overseas for at least 18 month full-time service, or three years part-time service, between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. Here’s a really nice group of six medals, mint in box of issue plus extras to an Australian Army Officer. Six Medals as follows below. 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence of the UK Medal, British War Medal 1939-45, Australian Service Medal 1939-45, all mint, wrapped in tissue paper as issued, with ribbons, all correctly impressed naming to’NX9293 D. Boothroyd, 73 Dalrymple Ave, Chatswood, N. All in original tissue wrap. Lovely large black & white copy of Boothroyd in Australian Army Summer Uniform as Captain, showing medal ribbons for the three stars (this ribbon bar included with group). Lovely contemporary miniature medal bar. Of six medals made by K. Ribbon bar of three stars. As worn in picture of Captain Boothroyd, clearly contemporary. 29th May 1908 in Southport England. 7th AUSTRALIAN DIVISION INTELLIGENCE SECTION. There are a number of pictures of Boothroyd available on the Australian War Memorial Website, in particular a group shot of No 1 Training school, Special Advanced Training Course, No 1, Australian Corps of Signals (Cypher). Boothroyd is identified as a Lieutenant at the time (1944). A well-travelled soldier, having medals for the Middle-East and Pacific Campaigns. These Australian groups of six, in particular with early enlistment date and late discharge dates, can bring to light some very interesting stories. Distinguished Flying Cross (G. VI. R) officially dated 1945; 1939 – 45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence & War Medal 1939 – 45 & Australian Service Medal 1939 – 45. The last three impressed named 423411 W. WALKER with the first two stars unnamed as issued, all are period swing mounted as worn. Comes with original D. C case & medal slip named to 42311 W. WALKER (3) & copies service records including photographs & squadron war diary including target lists & crews. Citation: Pilot Officer Walker has completed numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty. Was born on the 26/2/1923 in Burwood New south Wales. Pre-war he was working for the Department of Public Health as a junior clerk. He was given a leave of absence to join the R. He declined to join regulars but signed on with the reserve due to not wanting to give up government job and no career prospects with the RAAF. Great Kilroy cartoon Wot no career on interview records next to this statement! Enlisted 20/6/1942 as a navigator. Discharged as airman 18/1/1945 & commissioned Pilot Officer 19/1/1945. F Reserve 25/9/1945 being surplus to present personnel requirements. Canada training 6/5/43 – 5/8/43. Training UK 1/9/43 – 26/6/44. 300 Polish Squadron 26/4/44 – 26/8/44. 626 Squadron (RAF Wickenby, Lincolnshire) 5/9/44 – 3/2/45. 11 [RAAF] Personnel Despatch and Reception Centre 22/3/45 – 30/5/45 (this was the receiving station for Royal Australian Air Force aircrew in the UK). Embarked for Australia 30/5/45. Transferred to RAAF reserve 25/9/1945. Flying Hours: Anson: 162. Lancaster: 167 ops & 44 non ops. 626 Sqd 30 sorties 167 hours 8/9/44 14/1/45.
