In the rank of First Lieutenant with the 101st Airborne Division, United States Army, he was awarded the Silver Star under General Orders No. 4 (1945), for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy tanks at Noville, Belgium, as part of the Siege of Bastogne, on December 20, 1944 during the Second World War. In the newspaper article, Captain Heber Minton stated to the reporter that Stanfield’s learning. He shot at a tank with a rifle, and a Kraut tried to knock down our house. ” Stanfield himself was also interviewed, described the confrontation with the tank: “He sure blew a fuse when I shot at him.
