He attested for the Scots Guards at Liverpool in June 1900 and served in South Africa, January-October 1902. Promoted L/Cpl 22nd January 1901, demoted by order of the Commanding Officer 14th May 1901. Of note, he was able to pay 18 pounds to be discharged on the 22nd December 1902, after only 2 years and 197 days service, which was a grand sum for a private soldier at the time.
